Rocket releases G Dante Exum

The Houston Rockets abandoned security guard Dante Exum on Saturday, reaching a roster limit of 15 people.

Exum has signed a three-year contract during the off-season to stay in the Rockets.

The 26-year-old Exum, who was the fifth overall pick in the 2014 draft by Utah Jazz, did not live up to expectations. He was prone to injury, including missing the entire 2015-16 season due to a laceration in the ACL on his left knee.

Exum’s career average is 5.7 points, with 2.1 assists in 245 games (72 starts) between Jazz (2014-19) and Cleveland Cavaliers (2019-21). He shot only 40.7 percent from the field, including 30.5 percent from the 3-point range.

Exum played in just six games (three starts) at the Cavaliers last season, averaging 3.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists. He suffered an end-of-season calf injury in early January and was traded to the Rockets as part of James Harden’s blockbuster deal with the Brooklyn Nets.

The Rockets will have a season to visit the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday.
