Columbus, Ohio — City officials, including the newly appointed Columbus division of Police Chief Elaine Bryant, Deadly shooting of a 17 year old girl During a press conference on Friday.

Mackenzie Ridley was shot Thursday night outside a recreation center in eastern Columbus. She was taken to Mount Carmel East and later died. Police are still looking for the suspect.

Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther spoke with Bryant during a briefing on Friday with Safety Director Ned Petas.

The Friday briefing is the first time Bryant has a formal press conference as the city’s new police chief.

“Today is the first day of this job and today reminds me of what this job really means and what this badge means,” Bryant said. “It’s our job to find people who are responsible for this, and we’re going to do it.”

On the day of his appointment, Brian specifically spoke of Columbus’ shock to the surge in crime rates he saw last year. Ridley’s death records the 96th murder in Columbus just in 2021.

“As a community, we need to work better to build a better future,” Ginther said. “Gun violence is plagued our city. It is plagued cities all over our country. It must be stopped.”

In May, Ginther announced several programs aimed at keeping children attracted during the summer to curb some of the crimes the city is experiencing. One of those efforts included extending the opening hours of the community center to provide a safe place for children to hang out.

Columbus City School confirmed on Friday that Ridley had recently graduated from the district.

“We are trying to understand how such a beautiful life can be erased,” said Ridley’s uncle. “We must love each other more than this.”
