Man killed in Logan County tornado, son's memories are 'so nostalgic'

Dayton, Ohio (WDTN) — Nearly a week after three people were killed in an EF-3 tornado that ripped through Logan County last week, families are sharing memories with their loved ones.

2 NEWS spoke to Longfellow's family about how they are honoring his memory.

Neil Franklin Longfellow was supposed to be with his family the night a tornado claimed his father's life and destroyed his family's home.

“Hold on while your loved ones are still here, because you never know. Tomorrow is never promised,” Longfellow said.

Four members of the Longfellow family were inside the house when the tornado struck last Thursday. Longfellow, 69, was killed and three family members injured.

“I was in shock. I couldn't believe it. I mean, my dad was expected to live at least another 10, 20 years,” Longfellow said.

Longfellow said her brother, mother and stepfather were also at home during the storm. Her brother is now out of the hospital, but her mother and stepfather continue to recover.

He says he will miss his father's daily love and encouragement.

“Because he calls me every day and tells me he's proud of me for doing what I'm supposed to do,” Longfellow said.

He said his father was a good man who was supportive of everyone.

“He enjoyed the little things in life. He was happy. He was a goofy guy. You know, he's a Marine,” Longfellow said.

Family is raising money for father's proper funeraland the ongoing expenses his family needs to continue healing.

“They lost everything. Even their car. And what I mean is, everything you can think of is destroyed, gone. They have to start from scratch. ” Longfellow said.

Longfellow said the next few months will be difficult, especially as his father grieves May 9, the same day every year.

“I love him very much and I miss him very much. I hope we can celebrate another birthday together and he will be there in good spirits,” Longfellow said.
