Guardians’ attention focused on Team A trying to stop slipping seven games in a row

In Logan Allen’s last start for the Cleveland Guardians, the rookie left-hander was trying to prevent a three-game sweep.

He will be looking to pitch a complete game when he pitches against the visiting Oakland Athletics on Thursday afternoon.

“Every three games in the series I play for something,” he said.

The Guardians avoided a sweep by the San Diego Padres when Allen pitched on June 15, but it didn’t have much to do with the win.

Allen (3-2, 3.95 ERA) had the shortest start of the season, allowing 4 hits and 5 runs in three innings in Cleveland’s 8-6 win. He had two strikeouts and four walks.

Allen was given a 5-0 lead before he took the mound, but the Padres turned it around by scoring three in the bottom of the first inning.

“Ideally, I would like to take the lead and go out and score zero, but I just couldn’t do that,” Allen said. “I didn’t throw many strikes out of the gate and had a hard time finding the zone.”

Allen felt his pitch slip away from his hands much like he did in May, when he started five games and went 1-1 with a 2.83 ERA.

“Don’t think too much,” he said. “Return to the original state immediately and prepare for the next time.”

Allen has never faced the A team.

Cleveland could be without right fielder Will Brennan, who injured his pitching shoulder when he made a diving catch in the Guardians’ 7-6 win Wednesday.

The Athletics have lost seven in a row after winning seven in a row.

Oakland will send lefty JP Sears to the mound in the final game of the series.

Sears (1-4, 4.24 ERA) started six straight games and allowed two earned runs or less, but allowed four hits and four runs in the seventh inning in a 6-1 loss to visiting Philadelphia on Friday. That streak has stopped. Phillies.

He struck out seven and did not give a batter a walk for two straight games.

“He made some mistakes against some good hitters,” said A’s manager Mark Cossai. “The balls just went up. Those balls really hurt him when he went off middle middle trying to get over the zone.”

Sears has added a slider to help against the Guardians.

“We’ve had a lot of pop-ups this year with new sliders that we started throwing during spring training,” Sears said. “A big part of my pitching choices this year has definitely been attacking them front to inside. .”

Sears made his season debut on April 4 against the Guardians, allowing eight hits and three runs in four 2/3 innings in Oakland’s 4–3 win.

His only appearance last season as a relief against the Guardians was on July 3 against the New York Yankees, when he allowed a run in two 2/3 innings.
