Tennis: LATA Single Tournament Final

Lima — Three years ago, Mason Stahl won the Lima Area Tennis Association (LATA) Junior Singles Tournament.

Now, as Shawnee’s next senior, Stahl is about to win the men’s title in the LATA singles tournament.

On Saturday, the first day of the LATA single tournament at Bunri University of Northwest Ohio, Stahl played 2-0 in today’s final.

Stahl was once a prominent figure in Elida, and Jacob Ramirez, now a junior at the University of Northwest Ohio, will win the men’s title scheduled for 10am at UNOH.

In his first match on Saturday, Stahl defeated Colin Welch 6-1, 7-5. Then, in the semi-final match, Stahl defeated Findley High School graduate Mac Robertson 6-4, 6-3.

Robertson plans to play tennis at Ohio Northern University next year.

Stahl said he had to keep Robertson moving on Saturday to get a chance to advance to today’s final.

“(I) moved him back and forth many times, hitting the ball into the corner and moving him. I just had to grind it,” Stahl said of his victory over Robertson. ..

Stahl competed in singles at the Division II State Tennis Tournament during his sophomore season. This past season, Stahl has played in doubles in district tournaments.

Ramirez defeated Bath’s Ezlabron 6-1 and 6-0 in his first match on Saturday.

Later, in the semi-final match, Ramirez defeated former Van Wort’s outstanding player, beating Van Wort’s female coach Brandon Amstats 6-0, 0-6, 6-1.

Ramirez looks forward to the opportunity to play Stahl for the title.

“It will be a fun match,” Ramirez said. “I’ve never played in an official match, so this will be the first.”

On the women’s side, it is Van Wort’s Senior Gray Slots that will take over Elizabeth Simmons of Lima Central Catholic Junior in today’s title.

Lot defeated LCC Claire Janowski 6-4, 7-6 (1) in the semi-finals on Saturday. In her first match on Saturday Lot, she kicked Jennifer Alger 6-0, 6-0.

Lott is not a stranger in LATA tournaments.

“I think I’ve been playing here since 8th grade, but last year I had to rest because of knee surgery,” Lot said.

Simmons defeated Leslie Tech Schulte 6-2, 6-0 on other semi-final Saturdays.

Lot fought in her hands in the semi-finals on Saturday.

“It was very competitive,” Lot said, referring to her semi-final match. “Claire (Janowski) passes all the balls to (net). She is very consistent. Therefore, in most cases you need to play it to figure out who makes the mistake first. Yes. It was a good game. She had a great match. “

Simmons said he really knows Lot’s game.

“We (she and Lot) are always playing together,” Simmons said. “We are really good friends. I think we both really work (in today’s final). It should be a good match.”

There was no senior division in this year’s LATA tournament. However, it did not discourage senior tennis players from one region from entering.

When Mark Zubik retired from coaching youth soccer in Calida 32 years after the 2020 season, he had to find another outlet for his competitiveness.

Last fall, Czubik started playing tennis on a more consistent basis.

On Saturday, 65-year-old Czubik stepped into UNOH’s tennis court as the oldest player in this year’s tournament.

Czubik will play 2-1 on Saturday and will be competing for the title of Back Draw Bracket today against Shawnee’s Mac Davis.

“I started playing on the weekend last November,” Czubik said. “I attended Westwood (tennis and fitness center). I’ve never played in this tournament … I never really thought about it. But I played all winter. Later, I thought …. I’ll just do it.’

“When I saw them (usually) having an advanced division, I thought I’d give it a try and see where I was. I thought I’d go to a friendly senior tournament. Unfortunately, we didn’t have an advanced division. So I had to play outdoors. I thought,’What the heck. I’m still a competitor. I Loves to play. “So I went out, played, and had some fun. “
