The habitat is named after Oliver Nicholson, an Indiana toddler who found comfort in sloths during his many stays in the hospital.

Cincinnati — Ohio’s zoo names sloth habitats after an Indiana toddler who found comfort in sloths in a short life. Most of it was spent inside and outside the hospital.

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden has announced Oliver Nicholson’s second birthday.

Oliver died earlier this year. He suffered from a rare syndrome and had been in and out of the hospital for 18 months. Meanwhile, the sloth comforted him.

“Oliver was diagnosed with the VACTERL Association and had been in and out of Cincinnati Childrens during his short life,” said Oliver’s father, Alex Nicholson.

The stuffed animal was named “Mr. Suloth”.

“He will just snuggle up to it [Mr. Sloth] Oliver’s mother, Alyssa Nicholson, told 13 News. “And people are just starting to get him a sloth gift.”

After learning that the sloths at the Cincinnati Zoo are pregnant, the Nicholsons Petition started Name your baby Oliver. Over 80,000 people have signed the petition.

Alex Nicholson said he and his wife had contacted the zoo to discuss other ways to respect Oliver’s life.

Eventually, the zoo decided to commemorate Oliver by renaming the sloth habitat to “Oliver Nicholson Memorial Sloth Habitat.”

According to the zoo, the baby sloth’s mother is currently at the zoo’s Animal Ambassador Center, but in the future she may reunite with her 22-year-old companion Moe in the Oliver Nicholson Memorial Sloth habitat.
