The low-cost, spacious cabin makes the 2022 VW Taos an attractive crossover.

If you’re a Volkswagen hatchback fan, there’s no doubt that Volkswagen is saddened that it no longer brings the normally aspiring golf to the United States. Currently only available as a more expensive and sporty GTI. But that doesn’t mean that VW is abandoning that part of the market. Instead, there is the new 2022 Volkswagen Taos. This is reasonably priced from $ 22,995.

However, the new Taos is not a hot hatch that swells to 150psi. In fact, it’s not a sport at all. Instead, it’s like a wagon competing in increasingly crowded spaces with players such as the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Ford EcoSport, Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Jeep Compass, Chiaseltos, Mazda CX-30 Nissan Kicks, and Subaru Cross Trek. It is a transportation device. But unlike them, it sports timeless, satisfying, mature, well-organized and sophisticated styling. It doesn’t look like an escaper from a video game. In fact, it’s similar to the Atlas Cross Sport, which has been left in the dryer for a long time, but that’s not a bad thing.

When you open the door, you’ll be amazed at the vast cabin of Taos. Full-size Americans can actually live in the backseat without complaint — the head and foot room is generous. The seats are very comfortable and supportive. The atmosphere is similar to that of other VWS UVs, well assembled and designed with ergonomic simplicity, but a hard plastic symphony.

Offering in ascending S, midrange SE and finest SEL trim, Taos uses the MQB platform to support the larger Tiguan.

You may be tempted by the low base price of the S trim level, but we recommend choosing SE. This adds great features such as full keyless access, remote start, 8-way power driver seat with lumbar, front seat with heater, and side with heater. Mirror, heated washer nozzle, multifunction steering wheel wrapped in leatherette, privacy glass.

The low-end model comes with an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 6.5-inch center infotainment touch screen, and two USB ports. The Pricier model features a 10.3-inch instrument cluster and 8-inch infotainment screen, Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and three USB ports. The SEL model includes a navigation and Beats audio system.

Lift the hood and you’ll be greeted by a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a rating of 158 horsepower and a torque of 184 lb-foot, derived from the unit used in the Jetta. The front-wheel drive model is equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and the 4Motion all-wheel drive model is equipped with a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission that provides a sportier feel in addition to the normal sports and individual driving modes. .. However, there are differences in fuel economy. Front-wheel drive Taos returns an EPA estimated 31 mpg for combined city and highway driving compared to the 28 mpg for 4-motion Taos. The latter is $ 5 more per full tank and fuel costs are $ 150 higher per year.

Volkswagen’s IQ.Drive, standard on SEL trim and optional on other models, features forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian monitoring, blind spot monitor, rear traffic warning, and adaptive cruise control with stop and go. It is a semi-automatic driving support system. Lane keeping assist and emergency assist. Selecting this package will give buyers access to Travel Assist. This allows for partially automated hands-on drive up to 95 mph, powered by steering wheel buttons. As with most of these systems, we have found it to be of little use.

Of course, if you like the driving dynamics of golf, you’ll find that Taos is another animal. Acceleration is more than enough for day-to-day driving operations despite turbo lag, so if you need sudden power, you need to plan especially offline. However, this is not uncommon in this market segment. The ride quality has the compliance you would expect from a crossover, but with the worst bumps and scratches on the road. Cornering brings out an unexpected body lean given a relatively solid ride. There’s nothing wrong with Taos’s overall behavior, but it feels pretty vanilla to Volkswagen. Want to give more European-style flavors that buyers may be expecting? Of course, the same is true for all Volkswagen vehicles manufactured for the United States.

Still, the low price, spacious cabin and reasonable fuel economy of the 2022 Volkswagen Routos are worth considering. However, unless you really need all-wheel drive, choose front-wheel drive SE. Most buyers don’t really need the complexity, weight, and fuel economy of a 4Motion model. What’s more, adding four-wheel drive at a higher trim level makes this puppy taller than the larger Tiguan puppy, negating the overall point of buying an entry-level model. With careful selection of options, you will find that Taos is a capacity and efficient crossover and a very handsome crossover. Don’t expect a fun driving experience for GTI.
