Overdose, DUI Decline in 2022 Wheeling Crime Report

WHEELING, W.Va. (WTRF) — The stats are out, it’s official — Wheeling remains a friendly and safe city.

The police department has released a list of what it will do in 2022 compared to previous years.

Chief Sean Schwartfeger praised the patrols he sees in his neighborhood.

That’s why the number of arrests overall increased by 6% last year, he says.

Much of this year’s increase was in what police call “Group A” crime.

These include property crimes and crimes against people, with increasing thefts of bicycles, catalytic converters and shoplifting.

That includes a more than 60 percent increase in robberies, but Chief Schwertfeger says it’s not as big as it looks.

I don’t want the citizens of Wheeling to think people are coming to their homes. What we are dealing with are vacant structures where either addicted individuals or vagrants break into these vacant structures and steal any copper piping or other precious metals that may be inside.

On the positive side, the completion of a major highway project has reduced both crashes and traffic violations.

Vandalism and weapon crime both decreased by more than 30%.

The chief says the number he’s most proud of on the report is a 22% reduction in overdoses.

He credits the Ohio Drug Enforcement Administration and the Wheeling Police Department for cutting off drug supplies before they hit the streets.
