Upper Arlington will host the first ever pride event

Kathy Adams and other leaders have launched Rainbow UA in response to recent conversations in the community surrounding gender-neutral bathrooms.

Upper Arlington, Ohio — A newly created organization will host the first ever pride event in Upper Arlington this year.

Kathy Adams and other leaders launched Rainbow UA in response to a community-wide conversation discussing the gender-neutral bathrooms of the newly refurbished Upper Arlington School.

“A little part of why we do this is to hear that the community supports them, that we are here for them, and what they are experiencing. To ensure that students understand, so we are trying to realize a list of all their wishes for pride, “Adams said.

The event will feature live DJs, information booths, drug shows, live theaters, vest dress pet contests and many other family events from 1pm to 6pm on Sunday, June 13th.

The school district has installed men’s and women’s bathrooms in these six new schools, with bathrooms available to all students. The bathroom has a key and a floor-to-ceiling door.

At the Board of Education meeting in May 2021, many parents expressed their support and concern for the bathroom.

“I’m also worried about the safety of my daughter and son,” said one parent.

The city of Upper Arlington has informed the district that bathrooms need to be labeled to comply with Ohio rules.

According to Adams, the students in the district are well aware of what they are talking about during the conversation, and they are discussing the need for inclusiveness and the issues they see with their parents.

“Students have had experiences in schools that include homophobia,” Adams said, adding that the idea of pride came from a desire to help students. “It started with a lot of conversation and a lot of leg work to understand what is best to uplift and support the LGBTQ + community in Upper Arlington.”
