Vodafone Idea (Vi) is testing the use of street furniture for small cells and aerial fiber deployments in Bhopal smart cities as part of a pilot test sponsored by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. These pilots aim to make the inter-sectoral infrastructure more accessible for rapid deployment of 5G networks.
Street furniture such as traffic signal poles, street light poles, smart poles, billboards, direction boards, road signs, legs across bridges, and city bus shelters are used to test 5G small cells. To test 5G readiness, TRAI chose Vi and conducted the test in Bhopal Smart City as the country’s leading smart city location. Pilots include MP State Government, Bhopal Municipal Enterprises, District Collector Offices, Bhopal Smart City, Bhopal Police, Bhopal City Link Limited (Bus City Services), DISCOM, Advertising Agencies and other state government agencies. The learning of this project will be used for 5G deployment in other smart cities in the country. In this pilot, Vi demonstrated 1 Gbps 5G download speed to mobile phones at four locations: New Market, Joti Square, Prabat Gasoline Pump, and Interstate Bus Terminal.
TRAI has tested 5G readiness using small cells and antenna fibers in various locations across the country. Vi is also testing the use of street furniture for small cell and aerial fiber deployments at the Namma Metro Rail at New Delhi International Airport in Kandla, Gujarat.
Vi has demonstrated a variety of 5G-based technology solutions and use cases as part of government-assigned 5G trials of trial spectra in Pune, Maharashtra and Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
Small cells are network devices deployed by Vi to enhance the coverage and capacity of 4G networks. In the future, tests are being conducted to test equipment for 5G network deployment. It uses a higher frequency spectrum to provide ultra-fast broadband speeds and is located close to the user to respond quickly to user requests. According to TRAI, these pilots will be very helpful in making the inter-sectoral infrastructure more accessible for rapid deployment of Telcos 5G networks after DoT assigns 5G frequencies. .. Hundreds of 5G small cells need to be installed in an area of 1 square kilometer to provide good coverage. Installation of these 5G small cells requires the use of street furniture already available in various locations such as poles and billboards, eliminating the need to build thousands of new towers. This not only guarantees the rapid deployment of 5G, but also unleashes the true potential of underutilized street furniture at the port.
