LightSound technology brings solar eclipse experience to the visually impaired

Dayton, Ohio (WDTN) — As the total solar eclipse approaches, two Ohio agencies have introduced new technology to make the event more accessible.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD) collaborated to ensure everyone could experience the solar eclipse.

A special device called LiteSound will be made available to the visually impaired at Ohio state parks and wildlife refuges in the total area.

“As the shadow passes over the sensor, the sound actually changes, going from a high beep to a low beep and finally a full click, getting higher as the shadow moves over it. 'Again,' said Lindsey Deering of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

These devices connect to speakers and allow groups to experience LightSound together.

Those who won't be heading to a state park or trail during the eclipse can download the Eclipse Soundscapes app. This free app is available for both iPhone and Android devices and is designed for people who are blind or have low vision.
