West Jefferson’s Jessica Trimble joined Ohio’s “belt-save” club after being rescued from a life-threatening injury with a safety belt. The accident occurred on February 24 on State Highway 161 in Madison County.
On May 24, West Jefferson Post Commander of the Ohio Highway Patrol, Lieutenant Robert A. Curry, proved “saved by the belt” signed by Ohio Public Security Secretary Thomas J. Sticklas and Colonel Richard S. I gave the calligraphy to Trimble. .Fambro, patrol director.
“Jessica is a living testament to the effectiveness of safety belts,” Curry said. “Everyone needs to conclude every trip, every time.”
According to preliminary data for 2020, 487 people were killed in a road accident in Ohio where safety belts were available but not in use.
The “Belt Saved” club is a joint effort of the Ohio Public Security Bureau and more than 400 Ohio law enforcement agencies. The club is designed to recognize those who have benefited from the decision to wear a safety belt.
Trimble also received a “belt-saved” license plate bracket.
After the award ceremony, the Madison County Safe Communities Coalition raised awareness among locals with an annual Click It or Ticket kick-off. The event marked the beginning of a nationally recognized seatbelt click-it-or-ticket campaign from May 24th to June 6th.
The Safe Communities Coalition conducted a seatbelt check when the driver entered the London Kroger parking lot on Lafayette Street. The event was hosted by the Terry Family Ice Cream Shop and distributed free coupons for soft serve ice cream cones to those “captured” wearing seat belts. According to data collected at the event, 80.2% of residents wore seat belts.
The agencies attending the event were the Madison County Public Health Department, the Madison County Crisis Management Office, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, the City of London Police, the West Jefferson Police, the Plain City Police, and the West Jefferson Post on the State Highway Patrol.
