A night of musical mastery with the Antonio Hart Quartet

Soulful jazz melodies fill Bowman Auditorium as Ohio University Southern and Jazz Alive create a night to remember. Mark your calendars for Antonio Hart's April 26th 7:30 p.m., featuring his quartet, to celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month.

Jazz Alive, based in Cincinnati, Ohio, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and advancing the art form of jazz. Its mission, with deep roots dating back to the bebop era to the present day, is to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of this quintessentially American musical genre. This year, Jazz Alive is going all out. ohio university southern campus To bring the one-of-a-kind Antonio Hart Quartet to the tri-state area.

Baltimore native and saxophonist extraordinaire Antonio Hart leads the quartet with a career as impressive as his talent. A graduate of his performing arts school in Baltimore and Berklee College of Music, Hart's musical journey has taken him far and wide. His 1997 Grammy-nominated album “Here I Stand” showcased his virtuosity and passion for jazz and won him praise and recognition around the world. Currently, Hart continues to inspire and educate budding musicians as the Aaron Copland School of Music's tenured professor and director of jazz studies at Queen's College.

Joining Hart on stage are three equally accomplished musicians, each bringing their own unique flair to the performance. Piano maestro Dan Carlsberg is a well-respected figure in the Cincinnati jazz scene, boasting his six-album discography. His work, infused with creativity and skill, promises to captivate audiences all night long.

The bassist is Dayton native Justin Dawson, whose musical journey began at the age of five. Dawson is well-versed in a wide range of genres, from rock to his own R&B, and his versatility shines through with his delicate yet passionate rhythmic chops. Dawson is an integral part of Cincinnati's vibrant music community as coordinator of his weekly jam sessions at the North Side's Liberty Exhibition Hall Lounge.

Completing this quartet is Philip Tipton, a virtuoso drum player who comes from a family of percussionists. With a scholarship to the University of Cincinnati College of Music, Tipton honed his craft alongside jazz legends and Christian artists. His rhythmic flair and dynamic energy promise to keep his toes tapping and his heart racing all night long.

But the celebration doesn't stop there. In the days leading up to the performance, the Antonio Hart Quartet will be working with schools and educational initiatives in Ohio and Kentucky to inspire the next generation of jazz enthusiasts.
