A food bank fighting hunger in Trotwood

Trotwood, Ohio (WDTN) — Visiting food banks in Ohio faces big choices, according to a new study. Ohioans in need of food must decide whether to pay for food or just pay the bills.

Foodbanks say people are also being hit hard by inflation in areas hit hard by food insecurity. The organization organizes mass food distributions like this one to bring food directly to the community.

Obie McGee, a Trotwood resident, said the high prices at grocery stores were making it increasingly difficult for people to buy food. It was her first time attending a food distribution event.

“There are a lot of people here in Trotwood who need food and everything,” Maggie said. “Then the eggs got taller, and he got one more of everything he could find. Well, they’re not all the same.”

A study by the Ohio Food Bank Association found that 8 out of 10 food bank visitors are seeking help because inflation is on the rise. For the majority of those seeking help, that means people have to decide whether to spend their money on food, gasoline, utilities, and even vital medicines.

“These are really tough times. People have been dealing with rising inflation and persistently high food prices,” said Amber Wright, food bank development and marketing coordinator. “And once the temporary emergency ration ended, many struggled to get food on the table.”

Wright said food banks are trying to stop hunger at its source, even though nonprofits provide food to communities.

“We want to start looking at some of the policies that put people in our shoes first.”

Maggie says the food bank is helping people in the Trotwood community who are really in need, so she’s very grateful.

“I think what they’re doing for people right now is just a blessing,” Magee said.

The food bank said more than 700 families were expected to line up to pick up their food. Families that do not survive will be given resources for weekly food rations and other services in the community.
