The Ohio University Facilities Management and Safety (FMS) has announced that the Athena Cinema at 20 South Court St will be temporarily closed starting Wednesday, May 24, due to unforeseen building repairs.
The closure will affect all three theater spaces and is tentatively planned to extend through the summer, but a recent building inspection indicated potential structural maintenance needs within the 108-year-old theater space. This was done in response to the identification of Prompt restoration will ensure the integrity of the historic building.
Athena Cinema staff will be able to continue working in the building during the restoration work. Additionally, both local businesses at 20 South Court St. have been notified that they can continue to operate normally.
“The Athena Cinema team appreciates your patience and support and we cannot wait to reopen our doors to the community in the coming months,” said Alexandra Camodi, director of Athena Cinema. “In the meantime, we will continue to keep our historic marquee lights lit, find ways to present our shows elsewhere where possible, and provide regular updates to our valued theatergoers and community members. I will continue.”
Event rescheduling/moving and additional details
A number of scheduled Athena Cinema public events are already in the process of being relocated and/or rescheduled. The latest event updates are available online at: Ohio University Event Calendar and athena cinema.com. Additional information will continue to be shared as it becomes available.
Athena Cinema staff will contact those who have purchased tickets or booked rentals for upcoming events directly to discuss options for ticket refunds and event rescheduling.
