Champion, Ohio (WKBN) – The historic Harper House in Champion is about to be demolished, but one person is trying to stop it.
Harper House was built in 1840 and served for some time as the world headquarters of Copperweld Steel. Cindy Mines, who has worked to preserve historic homes in Trumbull County, is working to ensure that this home is preserved as well.
“It’s a historic home and I was worried about what they were doing,” Mines said.
An addition to the house that was added as a meeting room by Copperweld in the 1940s appears to be being demolished. I’ve confirmed that Holdings has permission to demolish what’s there.
“The interior was a mess the last time I was there seven years ago, but it needs some cleanup. The bones are fine,” Mines said.
Last year, Mines led an effort to save Howland’s historic Yellow House, which was slated for demolition.since then Moved to a safer location. Now she works to save Harper House, whose front is overgrown with trees and bushes. The same goes for acorn ornaments.
“Personally, I want a restaurant or something. There is,” said Mines.
WKBN First News has tracked down a person with possible ties to Warren Steel Holdings and left a message seeking comment, but did not receive a response.
