toast, a point-of-sale and management systems company that records millions of transactions, has released data analyzing chip trends by state. The average tip in the US is just below the 20% tip that is said to be a “good” tip.
Ohio is in the same region as Wyoming and New Hampshire and tip an average of 20.7% in bars and restaurants.
The deal revealed that tipping trends had little to do with statewide wealth. Some of the worst tipsters are found in California, Washington, New York and New Jersey, which have some of the highest per capita incomes.
Residents of West Virginia and Kentucky were among the best tipsters despite their tendency. not wealthy.
Delaware is the most generous state in tipping. First State’s average tip rate is 22%, followed by her 20.9% in Indiana. Texas, Hawaii, New York, Arkansas, Louisiana, Nevada, Florida, Washington and California tipped the least, at 18.9% to 17.6%.
Toast said states with higher minimum wages for restaurant workers, such as California and Washington, frequently appear near the bottom of the generosity rankings.

As of March 2018, the average tipping rate for full-service restaurants was 19.7%, the same as in 2023. Over the same period, quick-service restaurants fell by 0.8%.
Toast’s data analysis covered quick-service food orders and credit or digital payments in full-service restaurants. Cash tips are not included in this figure.
Toast said the rankings were drawn from restaurants using its Toast platform, which has about 85,000 locations.
