Ex-Muncie Cop Admits to Attacking Arrested Persons, Falsifying Reports – WOWO 1190 AM

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A former Muncy police officer kicked, punched and assaulted several people during his arrest and then pleaded guilty to writing false reports to cover up his wrongdoing, prosecutors say. said.

Chase Winkle, 35, pleaded guilty Monday in U.S. District Court in Indianapolis to five counts of physical abuse of an arrested person to deprive him of his constitutional rights, and six counts of obstruction of justice. His sentencing is scheduled for March 3rd.

The obstruction charge stems from allegations that Winkle filed fraudulent police reports about arrests, usually falsely claiming that the arrestees were resisting when he attacked them.

The assaults occurred in 2018 and 2019 when Winkle’s father, Joseph Winkle, was the Muncie Police Chief.

Prosecutors said last year that Winkle’s behavior included “kicking, punching, hitting the knee, and using a taser gun on an arrested person without justification,” and that the arrestees, including those requiring surgery, were arrested. said to have caused bodily harm to

Winkle, who has been on unpaid leave since his arrest in 2020, was fired by the Muncie Police Merit Commission on November 17.
