An Ohio man has been sentenced to prison after his son went to school with a backpack full of drugs and tried to retrieve it before anyone knew.
Corey Tobren Rice pleaded guilty on March 16 to felony felony possession of cocaine, aggravated possession of a drug, and possession of a fentanyl-related compound.
He also pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of endangering children.
On Monday, April 3, Rice was sentenced to no less than five years and no more than 7.5 years in prison.
Rice could be released after five years if he behaved well, but could face an additional 30 months in prison if released and reoffended.
Rice sent his son to Hills Elementary School in Jefferson County with the wrong backpack, sources said.
A school teacher discovered the smell of weed and inspected the backpack, which was full of drugs.
School officials contacted the sheriff and Rice, who asked for the backpack to be replaced, but changed his mind and fled to another state.
Rice was eventually found in Columbus, Mississippi and returned to Jefferson County.
