Girard City Council to Buy Back and Renovate Wellman Theater

Girard, Ohio (WKBN) – The Girardeau City Council should decide on Monday whether to purchase and renovate the old Wellman Theater.

Girard Mayor Jim Melfi said: His new project inspired by another popular theater In the county, Warren’s Robbins Theater.

This is something the city has been debating for most of this year.

In late February, Melfi asked the council for funds to purchase the Wellman Theater. I want to make the theater the centerpiece of urban redevelopment.

The building alone would have cost just over $72,000.

Mayor Melfi said Girard’s school was looking for a performing arts center and asked the district to partner with them. In March, the school district went on record saying not affiliated with the city on this restoration project.

The district said it was not a viable option to support the educational needs of schools in the city of Girard.
