Jeffrey A. Finkle Now accepting applications for the Ohio University Economic Development Internship

Thanks to multiple donations from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) to the Ohio University Foundation, Ohio University: Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service Intern at IEDC and gain hands-on experience with local economic development issues and trends.

The establishment of this internship recognizes 25 years (and now more than 30 years) of national leadership in economic development by Ohio University alumnus and University Medal of Merit recipient Jeffery A. Finkle. . Jeff Finkle is a leader in economic development and a recognized international authority. As Chairman and CEO of the International Economic Development Council (IEDC), the world’s largest economic development membership organization, he brings his expertise in community revitalization, business development and job creation to projects across the country.

Position description: Jeffrey A. Finkle Ohio University Economic Development Intern will work closely with IEDC staff as part of a team in a fast-paced environment to advance IEDC’s mission. Through hands-on research, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the subject of how communities recover economically. Network with experts in economic development and related industries and gain an insider’s view of career opportunities in economic development.

Liability includes, but is not limited to:

• Conduct and compile research on the latest trends in economic development. This often involves Internet and journal-based research, as well as a high volume of oral telephone interviews with practitioners and research institutions.
• Support the development of best practice research and case studies on various economic development themes
• Help prepare forums on various economic development subjects/topics
• Assisting with site visit preparation and background research for community economic development assessments

IEDC interns play an integral role within the organization and are treated as such. Content-based activities go far beyond administrative tasks. As such, interns are expected to be able to initiate and responsibly complete tasks and projects.

This competitive internship is aimed at students who want to learn new subjects, expand their current knowledge and gain valuable work experience, especially in the field of economic development. Interns often have the opportunity to attend his local IEDC conferences, brown bag lunches, and professional development webinars.

Summer interns are expected to work up to 40 hours per week and spend 10 weeks of the summer in the internship.

Eligibility: The Jeffrey A. Finkle Ohio University Economic Development Internship is open to both undergraduates (junior or senior status) and graduate students who have worked at or are affiliated with Ohio University’s Voinovich School. In addition to MPA, MSES, and Voinovich Scholars, students who have current or past employment at Voinovich schools through applied centers and consortia are eligible to apply. All applicants must be Ohio University students in good academic standing at the time of application.

Students must be pursuing fields related to economic development, urban and regional planning, public administration or public policy.

Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Note: For graduates, the final eligibility date for employment in this internship is July 1, 2023. He remains eligible for internship consideration, but his last date in the position will be July 1st.

Note: International students who are about to graduate will need permission to work after graduation.

Scholarships and Tuition Assistance: No (travel assistance is provided but is considered taxable income)

University credits: This internship is eligible for college credit for up to 6 credits. The intern must submit the weekly magazine to his or her faculty member and also submit the final thesis.
