Mad River Schools strengthens safety protocols

Dayton, Ohio (WDTN) — The Mad River Regional School District mourns the loss of its defenseless children.

The district also believes it is making the right decisions for its students and staff by allowing trained teachers to carry firearms in the event of a school shooting. It is a thing.

The school is one of the few areas where trained staff can operate firearms during school shootings.

In 2017, the Mad River School District implemented a program that enabled teachers and staff to receive extensive training in protecting students with firearms. The school superintendent says it may not be common in schools, but it works well in schools.

“It is something that is accepted in our community and it works for us. We recognize that there is a difference,” said Chad Wynn, Mad River’s Regional Superintendent of Education.

Parents in Riverside backed the district’s decision, saying more schools should take the decision as school shootings are on the rise nationwide.

Stebbins High School parent Charles DePoyster says it means the most to him because his daughter feels safe coming to school every day.

“I can’t help but feel how the child feels about it. It’s something that’s really affecting these kids these days that teachers should protect her.” I know she feels safer knowing that,” Charles DePoyster, Parent of Mad River Local School District, tells 2 NEWS.

Teachers hide weapons around buildings, but those buildings have signs and other safety measures are in place on campus. Contains one entry point.

The district plans to continue adding additional safety layers. School leaders believe they are less likely to be targeted because all the measures are already in place.

“I’ve been very vocal about this since we rolled it out, so this is no surprise or secret to our community,” Wyhen said. It’s an added layer of making us a difficult target in the sense that if an intruder comes into our building, we have a team to respond to it.”

Faculty and teachers who participate in the program are said to be accredited by the Ohio Peace Academy Training Academy (OPOTA) and re-accredited annually.
