Man tortures dog with machete, Toledo police say

TOLEDO, Ohio — On Wednesday morning, in Toledo City Court, Judge Nicole Cooley ordered a man in western Toledo to stay away from animals.

Harley Gere, 20, was arrested around 1 a.m. Wednesday and charged with animal cruelty.

According to court documents, toledo police Called in to a trailer home community on Nebraska Avenue for a health check. They found the dog with multiple head injuries next to a bloody machete.

Police reported that evidence in the home and evidence from the caller provided sufficient reason to believe the dog was being tortured by Geer.

Gear’s bond was set at $2,500. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Thursday morning. His charges are second-degree misdemeanors.

The Toledo Humane Society reports that it investigates more than 2,000 animal abuse cases each year.
