Maple Heights police officer injured in chase crash

Maple Heights, Ohio — A Maple Heights police officer was one of three people taken to hospital with minor injuries in a nighttime clash. including tracking.

Authorities say the situation began early Thursday morning as Maple Heights police pursued a Jeep Cherokee that was “driving recklessly and had no visible registration or other violations.”

Police said the chase began near the intersection of Broadway Avenue and Libby Road and continued to Lee Road before entering Cleveland.

As the chase neared Judson Drive on Lee Road, the jeep and police cruiser circled unrelated vehicles, waiting to turn into Larry’s car.

“After they passed around the driver, a second cruiser, slightly behind the chase, approached the same area with its lights and sirens activated,” according to a Maple Heights Police Department press release.

As the driver attempted to enter Rally’s in front of the second cruiser, police said officers attempted to turn around the vehicle but struck the front end.

“The cruiser veered into the rally parking lot and struck the front end of another vehicle in the parking lot before proceeding onto the lawn of the property, where it rolled over.”

The drivers of all three vehicles involved in the accident were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, police said. The officer is said to have been treated and released.

Meanwhile, Maple Heights Police are looking for information on the Jeep driver.

“This vehicle is believed to have been involved in other illegal activities in Garfield Heights and Cleveland prior to this chase.”

Maple Heights Police said the chase “ended up in the Harvard Avenue and Lee Road area.”
