Matthew Shaftel, dean of the School of Fine Arts, announced his plans to leave Ohio University at the end of June. He has accepted a new role as the 11th president of Russell Sage College in Albany and Troy, New York.

Executive Vice President and Provost Elizabeth Sayers will announce the selection of an interim dean in the coming weeks, and a national search will be conducted during the next academic year.

“Dean Shaftel is an innovative leader who has left a lasting mark on Ohio University and the university,” said President Sayers. “We are grateful for his work in advancing the fine arts at Ohio University and are confident that he will leave the university on a great trajectory.”

Dean Shaftel served as dean of the College of Fine Arts for seven years, leading the college to significant growth, including increased enrollment and student success, the launch of numerous new academic programs, and the addition of performing arts and concert series.
