Norfolk Southern trains first responders in case of another derailment
First responders from several different agencies have learned what to do when a train hits a car, derails, or spills hazardous material, as happened in eastern Palestine.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Wednesday marked three months since a train laden with toxic materials derailed in Eastern Palestine.
Since then, 10TV has learned that trains carrying hazardous materials often pass through central Ohio without warning.

“This is a great example of the training we provide so that first responders not only know what a rail emergency looks like and how to deal with it, but also build relationships. said Connor Spielmaker, senior communications manager at Norfolk Southern, when he arrived on site.
The Norfolk Southern Hazmat Manager guides first responders through different types of vehicles, explaining the types of cargo being carried and how to respond.
“All fire departments have access to some sort of training facility with cars, structures and what they do every day. says Spielmaker.
For years, Norfolk Southern has hosted such training sessions across the country, but added that interest has increased since the derailment in East Palestine.

Spielmaker added that railroad employees and contractors are in East Palestine every day, making it “a good place for the community and the surrounding area.”
Fire Battalion Columbus Division Commander Steve Martin said first responders learned in a full-scale training lab and gained hands-on experience.
