One dead in Gahanna accident involving fire truck

Gahanna, Ohio (WCMH) – One person was killed Sunday night in a three-vehicle crash involving a Columbus fire engine.

A Columbus police commander said the accident occurred around 9:59 p.m. near Interstate 270 and Hamilton Road near Gahanna.

According to the Ohio Department of Transportation, Interstate 270 northbound is closed past the Broad Street exit on the east side of Columbus due to an accident.

Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Jeffrey Gitter said the accident occurred when a vehicle collided with the rear of a fire truck on Interstate 270 North.

The driver of the vehicle was confirmed dead, but the passenger was transported to Mount Carmel East in stable condition, Geither said.

A dog in the car collided with the fire engine, Gitter said, injuring a firefighter. A firefighter who was helping the patient at the scene at the time was in a stable condition and was transported to Mount Carmel East.
