Red Sox beat Phillies for 7th straight win

Chris Sale struck out 10 in six innings as the Boston Red Sox extended their seventh straight win Friday night in a 5-3 decision against the hosts Philadelphia Phillies.

Sale (3-2) gave up three runs on seven hits and one walk. Richard Briar, Chris Martin and Kenley Jansen each went on scoreless innings, with Jansen making his seventh save.

Zach Wheeler (3-2) gave the Phillies the worst home start of the season by giving up 5 runs (4 earned) in 5 1/3 innings. He allowed seven hits and no walks with five strikeouts.

Enrique Hernandez went 2-for-4 with Boston’s runs and RBI. Emmanuel Valdes scored with an RBI to make him 2-for-3, with Justin Turner, Rafael Devers and Triston Casas each scoring his one run. Nick Castellanos led the way to Philadelphia at bat, going 2-for-4 with an RBI double. With JT Realmuto and Alec Bohm each scoring RBIs, the Phillies scored all of their runs in the fourth inning, but ended on a five-game losing streak.

Cubs 4, Marlins 1

Justin Steele continued his strong start by allowing one run in seven innings, and Ian Happ hit a two-run homer as hosts Chicago beat Miami to take their third straight loss.

In his seventh start of the season, Steele (5-0) lowered his ERA to 1.45 and allowed only six hits, six walks and four strikeouts. A left-handed player, Jake tied Arrieta’s franchise record (since 1912), allowing 2 earned runs or less in 14 straight games.

Luis Araez went 4-for-3 for the Marlins and raised his major-leading average to .437. Miami is going 30-10 while losing four in a row after sweeping his series in his three games home from Chicago last weekend.

Rays 5, Yankees 4

Randy Arrozarena and Yandy Diaz hit home runs, and an RBI double by Wonder Franco in the seventh inning pushed Tampa Bay up to New York in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The Yankees scored four runs in the sixth inning when Anthony Rizzo singled and scored on Gleyber Torres’ double. Harrison Bader in relief after DJ LeMahieu walked he hit his three-run homer off Garrett Cleavinger to make it 4–4.

Franco’s go-ahead double in the raises off against Jimmy Cordero (1-1) scored Diaz from the start. Initially, Diaz was called up at the plate, but the calls were reversed after Tampa Bay challenged. Jason Adam closed out the ninth inning with his third save, giving the No. 1 Rays a 10-game lead over the basement-dwelling Yankees in the American League East.

Blue Jays 4, Pirates 0

George Springer hit a home run, and Chris Bassitt pitched seven innings, visiting Toronto to defeat Pittsburgh and end a five-game losing streak.

Basitt (4-2) gave up four hits and four walks, and struck out five. He teamed with Eric Swanson and Jordan Romano, each pitching a perfect inning and completing a four-hit shutout. Added.

The Pirates’ losing streak reached five games. Pittsburgh’s starter Rich Hill (3-3) allowed him 4 runs, 8 hits, 5 strikeouts and 2 walks in 5 1/3 innings.

White Sox 5, Reds 4

Elvis Andrus hit a three-run homer, and Lewis Robert Jr. hit a two-run homer to put Chicago ahead, 3-4, over the hosts Cincinnati Reds.

The White Sox won for the first time in Lance Lynn’s seven starts this season. The 35-year-old Lynn (1-4) allowed 4 runs in 6 2/3 innings and allowed 8 hits, and he struck out 8 without walking. Yasmani Grandal has two hits for Chicago, and after dropping the last 10 games, he’s won four in five games here.

Jonathan India is home to the Reds, who have lost four of their last five games. TJ Friedl, in Cincinnati he had two hits and he had one RBI. Hunter Green (0-2) allowed 5 runs and 7 hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out his seven and walked one.

Bailey Over won a duel of young starting pitchers, defeated rookie Peyton Battenfield, and when visiting Minnesota, overwhelmed Cleveland with the strength of Max Kepler’s two-run home run.

The 6.9-foot over made his third start of the season and lasted seven innings, allowing only singles by Jose Ramirez and Oscar Gonzalez and a double by Josh Naylor. Overs (2-0) he had 6 strikeouts and 1 walk, and out of 91 pitches he threw 66 to strikes, lowering his ERA to 0.98 in the process.

Battenfield retired the first 17 Twins hitters he faced before Christian Vazquez broke the 25-year-old rookie’s perfect game bid with two outs in the top of the sixth. Kepler turned on an 87 mph cutting fastball from Battenfield, crushed it 440 feet and hit a home run into the right-center field bleachers, ruining Battenfield’s shutout.

Mets 1, Rocky 0

Brandon Nimo hit a home run, Kodai Senga pitched six innings, and New York won the Colorado visit, losing three in a row.

Senga (4 wins, 1 loss) allowed 2 hits with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts while throwing a career-high 101 pitches. Drew Smith and David Robertson followed, and Adam Ottavino grounded a runner at third base in the ninth inning for his fourth save.

Colorado ended a season-high four-game winning streak after being held to five hits. Antonio Senzatera (0-1) made his season debut, giving up 1 run on 3 hits in 5 innings.

Orioles 9, Braves 4

Anthony Santander hit two homers, including his first career Grand Slam, to help Baltimore beat Atlanta to start a three-game series.

The Orioles have won 14 of their last 17 games and improved to 11-0 in the series opener. Santander gave the Orioles the lead with a solo homer in the fourth inning off Atlanta starter Max Freed, then put the game away with a slam against Joe Jimenez in the seventh. Santander has hit five homers this season. Dean Kremer (3 wins, 1 loss) won the game with 6 hits and 1 run in 6 innings.

Freed (2-1) finished with a 20-inning scoreless streak. He allowed 7 runs (5 ERA), 8 hits, 2 walks and 7 strikeouts in 6 innings. The lefty gave up his two home runs.
