Red Sox hope to continue developing young arm vs Rockies

The Boston Red Sox have three young starters showing strong performances against the New York Yankees this weekend and hope to continue that trend by sending 27-year-old Cutter Crawford to the mound for a second time on Tuesday. Three games in a row against the visiting Colorado Rockies.

Colorado won the rain-delayed series opener 4-3 in the 10th inning on Monday.

Garrett Whitlock, Tanner Hawke and Brayan Bello held the Yankees to six runs (five earned) in 19 1/3 innings and helped the Red Sox win two of their three games against New York. Whitlock, the oldest of the three, turned 27 on Sunday. All three pitchers pitched at least six innings against the Yankees, allowing no more than two runs.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said after Boston’s 3-2 win over New York Sunday night, “If only I could come here with those three kids and pitch like them.” I hope we can use this as fuel,” he said. “Mr. Hoyt, Ms. Tanner, Ms. Bello, they were amazing. Impressive.

“Obviously you have to throw to get back[in contention]. Offense will be fine. It’s only a matter of time before we get good at-bats and get people healthy.”

The development of Boston’s young starter became even more important when the Red Sox placed veteran left-hander Chris Sale on the 60-day disabled list on Friday. Sale developed a stress reaction in his left shoulder blade while pitching against the Cincinnati Reds on June 1.

Crawford (1-3, 3.68 ERA) took over Sale’s rotation spot on Wednesday, pitching at least three innings and allowing five hits and three runs (earned) in a 5-2 loss to the Cleveland Guardians. 2) allowed. Tuesday’s game will be Crawford’s first appearance against Colorado in his career.

Right-hander Chase Anderson (0-0, 2.25 ERA) is scheduled to start in the Rockies. Colorado requested waivers for Anderson after Tampa Bay nominated him for appointment on May 10.

Anderson has appeared in six career games (five starts) against Boston, going 1-0 with a 6.35 ERA. He will face the Red Sox, who have failed to score at least three points in nine of their last 10 games. Boston has a record of 3-7 in that period.

The Red Sox made two errors in Monday night’s loss, giving the Rockies a run on each error.

“It wasn’t a good game,” Cora said. “It’s frustrating. We don’t play and they score.”

Colorado is aiming for a third consecutive title. The Rockies snapped a six-game losing streak on Sunday by beating the San Diego Padres 5-4, and then scored a tying goal in the eighth inning to win the 10th against the Red Sox on Monday.

Rockies reliever Daniel Byrd won his first game back in Boston since pitching for the Red Sox from 2009-2013.

“I had way more good memories than negative ones, so my heart is there, just having fun,” Bird said, according to MLB.com.

Tuesday’s contest will be the second of a 10-game road trip for the Rockies. Boston started its six-game homestand on Monday.
