Reds call up valuable prospect Matt McClane

Infielder Matt McLain is set to make his major league debut with the Cincinnati Reds in the opening three-game series in Colorado on Monday.

McLain, who appeared in multiple games as a centerfielder at shortstop and second baseman, started the season by defeating Triple-A pitchers in Louisville. He was ranked as the Reds’ No. 5 contender by MLB.com.

348 in 138 at bats with 12 home runs before his promotion. He has a .474 on-base percentage and leads the International League in OPS (1.184), RBI (40) and total runs (98). He also has 10 stolen bases.

To make room on the roster, first baseman Joey Votto was placed on the 60-day injured list and outfielder Jason Friedl (left oblique contusion) was placed on the 10-day injured list.

McLain, 23, hit 17 homers and stole 27 bases in Double-A Chattanooga in 2022.

McLain was primarily a shortstop at UCLA and was the 17th overall pick in the 2021 draft.
