Seven dead in Half Moon Bay, California; suspect detained

The shooting occurred at an agricultural business on the outskirts of Half Moon Bay, a coastal city of about 11,000 people about 30 miles south of San Francisco, San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus told reporters.

Zhao, a resident of Half Moon Bay, is believed to have been a worker in at least one of the targeted locations, Corpus said. “We know he was acting alone at this point,” she said.

The Corpus said the motive for the shooting remains unknown.

Victims have not yet been identified. According to the Corpus, they said he was believed to be a nursery worker at two factories, but details had yet to be confirmed.

People lived in either or both places, and Corpus said they had children when the shooting occurred.

“It was the afternoon when the kids were out of school,” she said. “It is indescribable for children to witness this.”

A deputy was dispatched to the first location at 2:22 p.m. following a report of the shooting, according to the Corpus. They found four people dead and one seriously injured in the business.
