Toledo organization gives gifts to children in need

Toledo, Ohio —
It wasn’t long ago that Dawn Pratt had some bad luck and couldn’t afford to buy presents for her children that year. But then something happened that changed the course of her life.

“When my oldest son was 11, I had another family who bought me Christmas presents and put them under the Christmas tree when I couldn’t afford to have a good Christmas,” says Pratt. said.

Pratt says she never forgot the kindness, but it wasn’t until her father, Herb Jones, a Vietnam War veteran, died that she decided to repay the favor.

“I wanted to do something to honor him, so on Veterans Day 2019, I wanted to do something like this to help with Christmas gifts and pay tribute to him.

therefore herb hero This is an organization that collects toys and necessities for children and teens, wraps them up, and donates them to families who, like Pratt, have suffered. and found the families most in need.

“They give me all the names and information, and then each child receives a big bag of gifts, the family receives a laundry basket with household essentials with detergent and drying sheets, and the holiday ,” Pratt explained.

In the program’s first year, Pratt was able to donate to 23 families, with most toys paid for out of her own pocket. Now they have a year-round fundraiser, providing enough gifts for her 230 local families. While gift wrapping is a daylong event, helping out has become a family tradition.
Pratt’s uncle, Sonny Lewis, hopes Herb can be here today to see the work being done to his name.

“I think he’s very proud of everyone, just like I am. I’m very proud of my niece for doing this,” Lewis said. “I’m really happy with her and everyone who helped her. I’m sure her herbs will do just as well.”
