Veterans Affairs Museum Honors Black Soldiers

Columbus, Ohio (WCMH) — The National Veterans Memorial and Museum honored the pioneering soldiers of the United States Colored Corps (USCT) on Sunday.

These men fought in some of the most important battles of the Civil War, such as Antietam and Gettysburg, and played a vital role in Union victories.

These events have highlighted the contribution that the military has made to war and the lesser-known contribution to history.

Musical performances were played, and descendants of US Colored Corps soldiers shared stories.

Veterans Museum CEO Michael Felter said events like Sunday were the reason the museum was built in the first place.

“The idea was that we needed a memorial museum to tell the story of every veteran from every era and that it should be inclusive in its storytelling. That’s why today’s event is so great,” he said. rice field.

One historian who attended the event noted that President Abraham Lincoln attributed much of the federal success to the USCT.
