‘We salute you’: ODOT crew safety is at stake
CLEVELAND (WJW) — These are serious incidents that happen all the time.
A man and a woman tasked with repairing a road were hit by a driver who did not follow the rules for safe driving in a construction zone.
with amanda mcfarland Odot He said there were more than 4,000 accidents in Ohio’s work zones in 2023. This year, 34 crew members were injured while performing various tasks.
“They (ODOT crews) just want to show you a little bit of respect as you pass through their work zone, their office,” McFarland added.
Now a group of Ohio politicians, including Congressman Elgin Rogers Jr., are looking to do something about the ongoing problem. Ohio House Bill 429. “Some people just act recklessly, so this is an opportunity to say there may be consequences,” Rogers said.
The law includes increased penalties for drivers caught violating road rules in work zones.
- First offenses start with a $400 fine.
- A second violation will result in an $800 fine and a 90-day license suspension.
- A third violation carries a $1,200 fine and a one-year license suspension.
“This bill is a bipartisan bill because it protects the workers who are trying to keep us safe as we travel to and from work, school, and our families. That’s why,” Rogers said.
