Local power company promotes fraud awareness
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — For National Consumer Protection Week, AES Ohio wants to inform customers about utility fraud.
AES Ohio warns that scammers remain a threat to consumers and are stoking fear by threatening to disconnect utility services unless immediate payments are made.
According to energy providers, the most common type of utility fraud involves unsolicited communications from scammers claiming to be affiliated with AES.
AES listed several signs of potential fraud.
- Scammers may demand immediate payment for late bill payments and threaten to disconnect your service as a result.
- Scammers may repeatedly call consumers to pay their bills, demanding immediate payment or setting up a prepaid card.
- Scammers sometimes call consumers offering refunds or rebates, claiming they were overcharged on a previous bill.
AES says that when a consumer calls, its representatives will provide the customer with accurate and accurate billing and account information. Also, utilities do not require a specific payment method, instead offering consumers a number of options.
If you receive a suspicious call, AES Ohio asks you to call the local number 800-433-8500. If you are a victim of a scam, call your local police department’s emergency number.
