A police officer on duty was shot while chasing a suspected culprit on Block 2800 of Central Avenue, police said. stolen kia.
Police Chief Wayne Drummond said two detectives spotted the vehicle around 6:20 p.m. and when they approached the vehicle, the four suspects got out and started running.
“Both officers gave chase. As the suspects were running, one of them dropped his weapon. The officers actually stopped, grabbed the weapon, and put it in the detective’s car. explained Chief Drummond.
As officers got out of the detective car, one of the suspects in a bright orange jacket opened fire, and police believe they shot him four times.
“The detective was hit twice. Once in the arm and once in the leg. He was taken to a local hospital and is doing very well. I spoke to him and he was still hit.” Drummond said.
Another officer quickly performed a rescue with a tourniquet.
“Thank God he’s stable now. Shot in the arm. Shot in the leg. The bullet just went through,” said police union president Jeff Folmer. “I pray for the earliest possible recovery.”
Police are currently looking for four suspects involved in the incident.
“I think only one shot,” Drummond said. “We are currently trying to locate all four, especially the person who actually shot the officer.”
Drummond says he does not believe the officer released the weapon.
Mayor Justin Bibb was able to visit the injured officer at the hospital.
