Video: Plymouth Tornado — How Big Was It?

PLYMOUTH, Ohio (WJW) — A FOX 8 viewer captured video of a tornado that formed during a severe storm Thursday night. Including tornado warningswhich swept through parts of northeastern Ohio.

The National Weather Service confirmed Friday that an EF-2 tornado touched down in the village. It began along Marsh Road just northeast of New Washington in Crawford County, traveled east into northern Richland County, and rose along Willett Road east of Plymouth.

Wind speeds were estimated at 190 miles per hour. The maximum width was 250 yards. The tornado reached just over 16 miles above the ground.

Officials in Richland and Huron counties released details of storm damage in Plymouth, which straddles both counties.

Richland County EMA announced that tornado sirens were activated Thursday at 7:45 p.m.

Richland County MA Director Rebecca Owens said the damage included the roof and backside of a home being “ripped off,” a vehicle overturned and a camper van destroyed.

The tornado was approximately half a mile wide, according to Fox 8 Meteorologist Scott Sabol, based on storm reports from the Huron County Emergency Management Agency.

The last time a March tornado in the FOX 8 observation area was reported as an EF2 (or higher) was in 1986.

“Ironically, the March 1986 tornado was approximately eight miles away from yesterday’s tornado location,” Sabol said.

Since 1950, there have only been six March tornadoes of EF2 or higher in Ohio.

Tornado warnings were issued Thursday for several counties, including Medina, Wayne, Ashland, Richland and Huron counties. Tornado watches were in effect overnight for several counties in northeastern Ohio.

The NWS confirmed Friday that at least five other tornadoes touched down in Ohio.EF-3 and EF-2 tornadoes in Logan County;At least three people were killed there, and three EF-1 tornadoes struck, one each in Licking, Hancock, Mercer and Auglaize counties.
