Former FC Cincinnati forward Brandon Vazquez scored the only goal Tuesday to defeat his former team in Game 1 of the CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16 series, which Monterrey won 1-0 on the road on Thursday.

In the 24th minute, Monterrey’s Jesus Gallardo made a long pass to Maximiliano Meza, who was running up the right side. Meza crossed into the box and found Vazquez, who took one touch and fired a 12-yard shot with his right foot into the far corner of the goal.

Cincinnati finished the game with 10 men after manager Rodrigo Aguirre received a red card for violent conduct in the 70th minute.

The two-leg Total Goal Series concludes March 14 in Guadalupe, Mexico.

Vazquez spent the past four seasons with FC Cincinnati, scoring 42 goals in 112 games. He has played in eight career games with the U.S. Men’s National Team, scoring four goals.

The winner of the Monterrey vs. Cincinnati series will face either Inter Miami or Nashville SC. The latter two teams began their Round of 16 series late Thursday night.
